The name of this British concoction from the late 19th century is thought to be derived from the London slang for a pint of beer, "shant of gatter" (shant or shanter meaning "pub," and gatter being a word for "water" This "pub water" was a refreshing way to lower the potency of the beer. Ginger ale can be substituted for the spicier ginger beer.
