This classic aperitif cocktail, concocted in 1902 by bartender Charlie Mahoney of the Hoffman House in Manhattan, was purportedly named after a popular Bob Cole song, "Under the Bamboo Tree." Other versions call for sweet vermouth in place of the dry vermouth.
